The beautiful river that flows through Chicago has a rich and fascinating history. Back in the 1800′s Chicagoans were becoming ill with outbreaks of typhoid and other water-borne diseases. The Sanitary District of Chicago devised a plan to reverse the flow of river and though there were numerous economic and political setbacks, the river was permanently reversed in 1900, using a series of canal locks. You can find out more about the reversal from the book “The Chicago River: a natural and unnatural history“, by author Libby Hill and you can even join Friends of The Chicago River here.
